I’m excited to share that today, the Board of Supervisors approved my comprehensive wildfire preparedness plan—a vital step in protecting lives, homes, and businesses across San Diego County.

Ahead of the vote, I was joined by, North County Fire Protection District Fire Chief, Keith McReynolds, Escondido Fire Chief, John Tenger, Valley Center Fire Chief, Joe Napier.
These fire chiefs shared firsthand the challenges they face on the frontlines, emphasizing why immediate action is necessary. Their support reinforced the urgency of expanding firefighting resources, improving water supply infrastructure, and enhancing brush-clearing efforts.
What This Means for San Diego County
Increased Firefighting Resources – The County Administrative Officer will now work to secure funding for an additional twin-engine helicopter to fight fires day and night.
Better Brush Management – The County will explore all options for clearing hazardous vegetation, including grants, rebates, public-private partnerships, and even goats to keep fire-prone areas under control.
Water Supply Readiness – A full assessment of reservoirs, hydrants, and water infrastructure will ensure our firefighting resources are fully equipped to handle peak demand.
Community Protection & Insurance Reform – We’ll continue working and putting pressure on the State Insurance Commissioner to keep insurance accessible and affordable for homeowners in high-risk areas.
What’s Next?
The County will now work to begin implementing these measures, and I will keep you updated as we move forward. Your support has been invaluable in getting this plan approved, and I truly appreciate it.
Wildfires won’t wait, and neither can we. With this plan in place, we’re taking proactive steps to ensure San Diego County is prepared, protected, and resilient.
If you have any questions or feedback, feel free to reach out. Let’s keep pushing for smart, effective solutions for our communities.
