The Board of Supervisors Has a Long History

The County of San Diego Board of Supervisors has a long history, starting way back in 1889.

Prior to 1889, the supervisorial districts were set up differently with the County represented by four districts and at large members when the County was founded in 1850. Bold names indicate the Supervisor served as Chair of the Board of Supervisors.

Above are the Supervisors for each District for the past 35 years. You might recognize some of the names.

District 4 Supervisor Nathan Fletcher resigned May 15, 2023. Monica Montgomery Steppe was elected to District 4 on November 7, 2023 and sworn in on December 5, 2023.

District 1 Supervisor Nora Vargas resigned January 6, 2025. The First Supervisorial District Special Primary Election is Tuesday, April 8, 2025. The Voting Centers are open from March 29 - April 8 or you can vote by mail. This election will allow the District 1 residents to choose their new Supervisor rather than just be appointed.

Dianne Jacob served as District 2 Supervisor for 28 years and Greg Cox served as District 1 Supervisor for 26 year. Since then, term limits have been applied and a Supervisor may only be in office for eight years.

It is important for you to vote in this Special Election to insure that we get a good candidate who will work for the needs of District 1 residents. We don't want a Nora 2.0.

The entire Board of Supervisors list from 1889 may be found on the County website.
