San Diego County Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer Wants to Explore a Tax Increase

San Diego County Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer voted in December 2024 in favor of making San Diego County a "super sanctuary" jurisdiction. Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe and former Supervisor Chair Nora Vargas voted in favor also making it a 3-2 vote that passed. This was probably more a defiance vote against newly-elected United States President Donald Trump than anything else. But bad behaviors have consequences.

Chair Nora Vargas decided soon after that to not renew her oath in January 2025 to continue serving as a Supervisor. Maybe it was because the new border czar, Tom Homan, had stated that the deportation strategy will include targeting so-called sanctuary jurisdictions. Or possibly it was because of that six-page letter that Ms. Vargas had received on December 23, 2024, from James Rogers, Senior Counsel for the America First Legal Foundation. The letter summed up with the following two sentences:

"But no matter your views on our Union, the fact of the matter is that you and the other officials who support or enforce sanctuary laws, policies, and regulations have a very personal stake in the matter – you each could face criminal prosecution and civil liability for your illegal acts. We urge you to do the right thing, protect your citizens, and comply with federal law." —James Rogers, America First Legal Foundation senior counsel

Because of the vote of these three County Supervisors and the new super sanctuary status, the feds pulled the County's funds. They no longer give the County of San Diego $1.3 Billion. So now the County has a deficit of $138.5 million for the fiscal 2025-2026 year, increasing to $321.8 million in five years.

What was Supervisor Lawson-Remer's solution to this self-caused problem? Why not increase the taxes of the hard-working constituents who just can't seem to make ends meet?

Ms. Lawson-Remer has difficulties managing her own family budget. If you recall, back in 2022 it was discovered that she spent more than $7,500 in campaign funds on child care. I'm not sure that we want her presiding over our County budget.

So are you willing to pay higher taxes? Or do you feel that you pay enough taxes already?

Here's a few of the items you are taxed on currently:

With this Supervisor election coming up in April, it's important to look at each candidate carefully and decide which one will work for you and best meet your needs. And most importantly, you need to vote!
