Don't Suffer the Consequences

Wednesday, April 9th is the day the Board of Supervisors—not representing our District 1—will decide if they should allow or not allow an extremely large commercial storage facility to be built in a rural-residential neighborhood.

Imagine the Board deciding to knock down ten houses in your neighborhood and build a Big Box Store, like a Walmart. Are you starting to see the picture?

The site is already zoned for twenty 1/2 acre lots for a neighborhood to be built. But the developer is pushing hard to get his project done and supply storage for the nearby Spring Valley Swap Meet.

Drive over to that area and look for yourself.

Someone in the know, who has dealt with a lot of these cases, recently stated that storage units attract homeless people. And if a new storage facility is built 1.5 miles from the existing one, wouldn't you want to wander over to the newer, more modern building?

I visited the existing Quarry Storage last week. It looks pretty nice when there are no cars parked along the interior loading their junk out of a storage unit.

But you have to wonder about the huge cement blocks and the razor wire.

"Razor wire (also referred to as barbed tape or ribbon) is used to protect boundaries and/or perimeters by preventing or dissuading passage by humans. Razor wire's points are made very sharp and meant for ripping clothes and flesh as it follows the curves in the body when a person tries to cross over them."

Doesn't that seem a little harsh? What or who are they expecting to try to enter? Do we get razor wire on the proposed self-storage 1.5 miles away in a Bonita neighborhood? That will surely add to the charm of Bonita but we might have to change the name from Bonita (Spanish: beautiful) to Arriesgado (Spanish: risky, hazardous, dangerous, chancy, perilous, unsafe). I like Bonita better, don't you?

And then there's that Notice sign. Who is the warning for? Will the Self-Storage facility be bringing those same dangerous people into Bonita?

Finally, there's the issue of Quarry Road. Currently there are bollards in the roadway, on the Spring Valley side and on the Bonita side. Bollards are short, sturdy posts typically made of metal or concrete. They are frequently used to create a physical barrier to protect pedestrians.

What guarantee is there that the bollards will remain? If removed, Quarry Road could become a throughway from the Swap Meet and Spring Valley traffic connecting to Sweetwater Road and adding more traffic to our once bucolic countryside.

What's your role in all this?

Don't suffer the consequences. Act before the plan is set in motion. Be a good neighbor. Sit down for just five minutes today and write a quick email to:

telling the Board of Supervisors why you're against this Self-Storage facility. Be sure to include these references:

  • Opposition to Secure Self-Storage

  • PDS2024-AA-24-003 MUP Secure Self Storage

  • PDS2021-MUP-21-009

  • PDS2022-CC-22-0102.

It only needs to be a few sentences. It will take five to ten minutes. It doesn't have to be perfect. Just do it.

Allow this storage facility to be build in a residential neighborhood and we all lose. The gate will be thrown open and they'll be coming for your neighborhood next.

One of the San Diego Planning Commissioners told us as much. "Once we're done with Mission Valley", he said, "we're coming for Bonita."

Write the email.
