Chula Vista Mayor Calls for Strengthened Wildfire Prevention Measures

In light of recent wildfires that have ravaged parts of Los Angeles, Chula Vista Mayor John McCann issued a digital message to residents, urging them to take proactive measures to protect their homes and families in the event of potential natural disasters.

Recommendations for Preparedness

In his statement, Mayor McCann emphasized the importance of registering at alertsandiego.org to receive real-time emergency updates. He also highlighted the need to create a personal evacuation plan and ensure that all pets are microchipped for easier identification if they become separated during an evacuation.

“Microchipping pets is crucial so they can be identified and reunited with their owners amid the chaos,” McCann stated in his message.

Emergency Kits and Evacuation Routes

The mayor also listed essential items that should be included in an emergency kit:

  • Basic Supplies: Non-perishable food for three days, three gallons of water per person, and food for pets.

  • Essential Items: Spare car keys, cash or credit cards, a first aid kit, and a flashlight with extra batteries.

  • Important Documents: Birth certificates, passports, insurance policies, and bank documents.

He also recommended planning at least two safe evacuation routes that all household members are familiar with.

Reporting Fire Hazards

The message included a call to action for residents to report fire risk areas using a form available on the official Chula Vista Fire Department website (chulavistaca.gov/departments/fire-department). This resource is designed for residents to alert authorities about potential hazards that could threaten their communities.

Solidarity with Los Angeles

Mayor McCann expressed his condolences to the communities affected by the wildfires in Los Angeles and encouraged Chula Vista residents to support organizations like the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army. “There are many ways to help those facing this tragedy. Our solidarity can make a difference,” he said.

Preparedness is key to facing natural disasters, and Mayor McCann’s message underscores the importance of taking proactive steps to safeguard lives and property.
