Chula Vista residents may no longer feel artificial turf under the soles of their feet in the near future — at least on city property.
The Sustainability Commission will recommend the City Council adopt a policy that prohibits the installment and replacement of artificial turf on city property.
Commissioners voted during a meeting earlier this month to send a letter to council members and Mayor John McCann outlining the detrimental effects of artificial turf, which includes “its contribution to local temperature rise, increasing pollution in the form of microplastics, and habitat loss.”
The city also is becoming “increasingly urbanized,” losing open space to housing and other development — harming pollinators such as bees and butterflies and other animals, the letter said.
Commissioners said banning artificial turf would be in line with the city’s Climate Action Plan, and that other cities across the state have already enacted bans or are in the process of implementing them.
Officials are expected to further study the issue next year.
