Bonita-Sunnyside Community Park?

Not too many years ago, there was discussion of turning the Chula Vista Golf Course on Bonita Road into a large housing complex. I believe that they wanted to put apartments on it, but it might have been condos.

This did not go over well with the Bonita-Sunnyside community.

For one thing, it would have caused a disruption in the popular use of the trail along Bonita Road frequented by walkers, bicyclists and equestrians.

Chula Vista annexed most of our commercial resources (think $$$ makers) long ago. The Chula Vista Golf Course was one of those assets annexed.

San Diego County District 5 Supervisor Jim Desmond wrote in his February 28, 2025 community newsletter about a 24-acre golf course in Bonsall, CA that was put to good use: recreational amenities for the community.

"This project is more than just the transformation of a former golf course into 24 acres of recreational amenities; it's a promise to our community. A promise to provide a safe and beautiful space where kids can play, teams can compete, and families can gather to create lasting memories." —District 5 Supervisor Jim Desmond

Supervisor Desmond went on to say:

The first phase of this park will bring to life:

  • Playgrounds where imaginations can run wild

  • Shaded picnic areas perfect for family gatherings

  • Multi-use sport and soccer fields to support our local athletes

  • Restroom facilities and a park office for added convenience

  • Volunteer host sites to enhance security

  • Improved parking and access with new vehicle entry points

  • Sidewalk and intersection upgrades along Camino Del Rey"

If the topic of selling Chula Vista Golf Course ever comes up again, I hope that we will be able to push for something like what they did in Bonsall.

It would be in keeping with the vast recreational playground that has been created here already. Bonita-Sunnyside is the home to baseball fields, a bike park, camping, fishing, mountain climbing, trails that go on forever . . .

It is a virtual wonderland for our community and our neighbors around us.

I realize that we already have Rohr Park and it has many of these benefits. But it is often booked and unavailable.

New facilities could be added to a future park such as frisbee golf, croquet course (with tournaments), more playing fields, walking trails, playground equipment, horseshoe pits, volleyball court, fitness station, huge pine tree for Christmas decorating, Pickle ball court, picnic tables shaded by large Tipu Trees, sitting benches, flower gardens . . . the list is endless!
